JL DESIGN created the key visual for A Million Miles Away, a work by the emerging choreographer Huang Yi. Properly cropping and remixing the rubbings of annual rings, we showcased how people take their time to move forward on different paths. The key visual demonstrated Huang’s rich, emotional stories and precise dance steps, a delicate balance between digital technologies and humanities.
Huang Yi is an emerging youth choreographer and programmer from Taiwan. He has emotional stories to tell and values precision when it comes to visual designs and technologies. Dissecting different stages of “life” and centring around the theme of “time”, Huang made use of dance steps, technologies, and a revolving stage to carve out a million miles of journey on the 9-metre annual ring in A Million Miles Away.
Making use of Erik Linton’s rubbings of annual rings, we cropped and remixed the images to showcase different paces people adopt to advance in their lives. Some walk really fast while others are slower; some people may even stop and take a rest. Therefore, we used these rubbings to link with different dance steps – making circles, turns, and moving forward – symbolising different kinds of journeys in our lives and the ways under our feet. The slice of the annual ring also suggested the integration of a revolving stage and digital art.

JL DESIGN remixed images to showcase different stages of “life” centring around the theme of “time” as Huang made use of dance steps, technologies, and a revolving stage to carve out a million miles of journey on the 9-metre annual ring in A Million Miles Away, presenting various moments of life on the stage. Through the key visual of the work, we showcased rich, emotional stories as well as precise dance steps Huang tried to balance in his work – a delicate balance between digital technologies and humanities.
